Meta
Paul,
how about White Rabbit or The wind whistles Mary, my favourite Hendrix tune.
Stephen
I can imagine doing both of those. Thanks for the suggestions Stephen.
At a gig the other night, a member of the Friendly Society came up to me and suggested I write a song about the Bierly Waterfall, the only such feature on the Isle of Wight. I might well go and have a look, I’d not heard of it before.
The year of Sgt. Pepper’s… How about Lovely Rita?
And another member has just suggested a song about the Hammerhead Crane in Cowes, no doubt inspired by the lino cut that I just shared on Facebook.
The Hammerhead crane it is then!!! Should be ready by the end of this week.
Okay as there’s been no overwhelming winner, I’m going with Sugartown. Should be ready by the end of this week.
Kurt Weill ‘September song” (1939)
Hugs from Vienna!
alex
Love this!!!
anything from porgy & bess π
Ohhhh, I loves you Porgy!!
Found this through Elinor.
I love everything about this and I can’t wait for the album.
Thanks, y’all!
Lotta
Thank you Lotta. I’m in the middle of recording the album and am extremely excited about it too! Now, if you could just help me convince Elinor to come over to the UK for the launch in October…..Px
Last Day of June, i am sitting in front of my notebook thinking of what to suggest. here are my thoughts:
* “squatting” – i just glanced through a catalogue of a very good exhibition about the history of Viennese house squatters…
* “blood-red moon” – sigrid just told me a story of a late afternoon when she was fifteen. she had a walk and an enormous blood-red moon seemed to get smaller the nearer she tried to get…
* “harlequin ladybird” – we seem to have a nest of Harmonia axyridis (multicouloured asian lady beetle, haloween lady beetle, harlequin ladybird) inside our wooden window…
Ahh! some great ideas Jan.
Beautiful. I bet they’ll remember their time spent with you for a long time to come. I wonder if your “photograph people” will start to contact you?
This time a bit earlier:
“The Tide is High” – Blondie
“Jersey Girl” – Tom Waits
“Babooshka” – Kate Bush (you’d cover that video as well, wouldn’t you π ?)
and Sigrids votes:
“Crazy Little Thing Called Love” β Queen
“Upside Down” – Diana Ross
“You Really Got Me” – The Kinks
Some fabulous suggestions there! You know what, I was only listening to Babooshka the other day and thinking I could do a nice cover of that.
Think you might be a couple of decades out with the Kinks though π
π so true!
I got confused, because i was looking at albums released in 1980 – “One for the road” was a live album of the Kinks…
David Bowie: Ashes to Ashes
Ultravox: Vienna π
Hi Paul,
I know I am out by a couple of years (at least not decades!), but I think that Townes van Zandt’s “Flyin’ Shoes” would sound great…
Some great suggestions!
Uppps, my suggestion was postet as a comment….
I don’t really know the Cure very well at all, but have always rather liked Love Cats.
Dear Paul,
what a wonderful idea, i recently wondered whether you like robert smith and the cure.
if i could choose i’d make you cover a Cure song each month. it’s hard to choose one!
some of the following songs i can see being interpreted by you quite well. others i am curious how it would turn out π
– lovesong
– mint car
– accuracy
– in between days
– plainsong
– pictures of you
– the walk
hi paul, maybe you don’t remember me, but i remember you π i just came by mere chance onto your blog. oh how i love the warmth of your voice, the sweetness of your sparkling music… thank you for passing my way today, yes you will be loved again…
Cyril from Sand
Ahh yes Cyril, from the days of myspace!!!! So lovely to hear from you and such sweet words. Thank you!!! Px
yes, these so creative days! see what a cold and disgusting space it has become! anyways, don’t you ever play in France? hope to see you someday. cheers
[…] of my latest novel, which is set on the island during the heatwave summer of 1976.Β Many thanks to Paul Armfield, who so kindly hosted and interviewed me, to Wightlink for sponsoring my travel to get me over […]
How about Guy Clark’s My Favourite Picture of You? Perhaps with lovely Angelina providing the female vocal? I can hear it now and it sounds pretty perfect in my head
Lovely idea!!!!
Hope it’s not too late for the September challenge. Met up with Sam today and when I told her about this she immediately suggested Tindersticks’ Travelling Light. Why on earth did I not think of that! Can I take back mine and vote for hers? Angelina would still be perfect on the female vocal too!!
“Photograph” by Astrud Gilberto – perhaps with English lyrics?
Or one of the very very few R.E.M. songs i like: “Nightswimming” – there is a photograph mentioned!
But my most favourite, but probably with the least chances this month, is “Pictures of You” by The Cure π
Ooohh Astrid Gilberto, might be nice and would tie in with the Bossanova album I am recording in January (oops that was meant to be a secret)
Thank you for last month’s wonderful cover. I now have my favourite cover of my favourite picture. I don’t want to hog this forum, but I’ve given everyone a week to be fair and I am busting to suggest a song called Reentry by Vincius Cantuaria. I think it is perfect for a cover by you and this man’s music deserves to be more widely known. The Guardian said “if more people covered his songs, we’d be talking about him as the new Tom Jobim.” So I’d be dead pleased to help this effort along.
Ohhh that s beautiful. Thank you!
I saw you singing songs from ‘Found’ at the Musicport festival a couple of weeks ago and thought it was unlike anything I’d seen/heard before….Simple, empathetic, modest, and refreshing are words that come to mind; and I loved your voice and both of your playing – I hope I’ll have the chance to see you again. Have you heard of the Bandroom in Farndale? Nigel Burnham puts on some really interesting gigs on there and if you are ever looking for a place to play to an audience of around 100 I think you’d go down well there. Anyway best wishes and thanks
Sigrid and i hardly hear any new stuff, but there are two albums from 2015 we actually bought – not sure you if that’s anything you’d be interested in to cover…
Shannon and the Clams – Gone By The Dawn
The Sandwitches – Our Toast
hugs
Jan
Hi Paul, hope you’re well. Excited to hear about new album plans already! My vote β my favourite Bowie song, not an obscure one, I’m afraid β is: Golden Years.
As for the Labyrinth Soundtrack, i prefer “Magic Dance” or “As the World Falls Down” π
I always loved Bowie’s Soul-period, and would love to here your version of “Golden Years”, or maybe “Young Americans”
Other ideas:
Absolute Beginners
Fill your Heart
China Girl (‘i’d love to hear you sing: “oh baby, just to shut your mouth”)
Cygnet Committee
Rock’n Roll Suicide
Queen Bitch
Sweet Thing/Candidate
Dodo
And my favourite Bowie song:
Candidate demo version
Ashes to Ashes ….always one of my top favorites
And it was also my candidate for the 80ies Cover π
Big hugs from Alex
i am sorry, my browser did some strange things, please ignore that post (or delete it)
Ashes to Ashes…
This also was my posting for the 80ies cover π
Big hugs from Alex
Dear Paul,
I’d love to hear you do The King from an old Steeleye Span album, Please to see the King, about the Wren. Unfortunately I think i may be welsh, so will not qualify. If so I’ll go for Scarborough Fair instead.
Stephen
Thanks Stephen I think Welsh would be fine..
Hannover or not … and at which place?
Its a pitty.
An other stage in Berlin?
Wien?
Hi Paul, I love your songs and music. Have you any plans to play in Ireland in the near future? Kieran
Hi Paul! Pascale at Blue Labelle here.
I’ve heard you’re performing around Ventnor on Saturday 14th Dec? I’ve created a FB group all about December events in town, could you send me a bit more info about what you’re doing please, all the info I have is “Santa’s Saw”! Any more details including times or location would be great thanks, and i’ll post about it when I hear back.
Thanks again and see you soon!
Best wishes, Pascale
Thatβs a great looking instrument Paul
Iβm looking forward to hearing it soon

Great! That are great skills to make such a handmade musicinstrument! Wow. And also Juliano is a great musician. We enjoyed your concert in Bielefeld!
Just saw you on BBC news, what a fantastic voice, reminded me of Leonard Cohen. Bravo
Saw Paul at the station on 1st , we commented how great his beard looked and could see he was someone with presence and style with his wide legged jeans and his Guitar. When we got home and saw him on South Today immediately recognised the man at the station with flare in his stride β¦ now looking at his music
Have only just read this, thank you for the kind comments, made me really smile, I really hope you like the music. I’ve a few gigs in Southampton coming up, I’ll be posting them up on my website today. Best regards, Paul
Thank you Teresa. I’m so glad you liked it. I’ll be performing somewhere near you in the next couple of months, I’ll be posting details up on the website later today.
Best regards,
Paul
